How Skyler Bouchard Makes a Manuka Honey Face Mask

Manuka Honey Products For Skin Care

If you’re looking for an easy way to refresh your face and want clean ingredients for a quick DIY mask, there are a couple of staple items to have on-hand that will really get the job done, according to the Food Network’s Skyler Bouchard, who hosts Treat Yourself with Skyler. By using mask ingredients, you can eat as well, per Bouchard, you’re not only using natural, safe substances for your skin, but you’re also cutting the amount of waste you accumulate down. If anyone knows food, it’s Bouchard, who’s both an entrepreneur and a food blogger who’s been mixing unique ingredients together for skincare since about the age of 11. One such concoction involves Manuka honey and coconut oil.

According to Bouchard, the answer to making face masks from food is using what is best for individual skin types. Bouchard has said that her particular skin type is dry, which leads to her using coconut oil in her face mask, either mixed with sugar or plain to create an exfoliant. Bouchard travels around constantly, and coconut oil travels equally well for such trips thanks to the plastic jars they typically come in. “Instead of packing a bunch of lotions and face masks to go traveling, you can literally pack one jar of coconut oil,” Bouchard said.

However, if your face is oilier, Bouchard says to avoid adding external oils to your skin and to opt for Manuka honey instead, as it can apparently “open up your pores, which helps clean them out.” Also, if you're worry about breakouts, Manuka honey could help out in this department—per dermatologist Dr. Karen Hammerman with Schweiger Dermatology Group, "Its anti-inflammatory effects can decrease acne inflammation, and as an antibacterial, it leaves few bacteria to infect pores and cause acne."

If you find your skin somewhere between dry and oily, don’t feel you have to pick one or the other, as Bouchard says you can mix Manuka honey and coconut oil and create a nourishing, easy DIY face mask. However, even food experts like Bouchard have ingredients they still need to try out. For instance, Bouchard is captivated by women in Indonesia who use rice paddy water when washing their faces. She says milk properties within the water are apparently very nourishing for skin, adding, “I’m surprised it really hasn’t become a thing in the U.S."

Bouchard also revealed that an episode of her show features a mask that’s made from caviar and a few other unusual ingredients, which Bouchard admits might seem slightly bizarre. “People take fish oil supplements all the time because it’s packed with omega 3s and omega 6 fatty acids,” she said. “To put that on your face really makes sense because they can apparently help with regenerating collagen, and those fats are really good for the skin.”
