Manuka Honey Recipes

King's Hawaiian rolls are among the most popular buns on the market today. Their unique honey-butter flavor has fans craving another the moment they take their last bite. Well, imagine a bun that incorporates the wonderful flavor of Manuka honey! This recipe is extremely easy to make and will make your next burger the best burger you have ever tasted!

Ingredients for Whole Wheat Manuka Honey Burger Buns

  • 1 cup and 2 tablespoons of milk, divided
  • ¼ cup and 2 tablespoons of Manuka honey, divided
  • 1 package or 2½ teaspoons of active dry yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1½ cups of whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups of bread flour
  • ¼ cup or half a stick of butter, softened
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • Oats, sunflower seeds, or similar seeds for a garnish, if preferred

Directions for Whole Wheat Manuka Honey Burger Buns

  1. Heat up a cup of milk on medium heat until it’s just warmed. Remove the pan from the heat, pouring the milk in a small measuring cup or bowl. Stir the yeast in as well as a teaspoon of Manuka honey before setting to the side until your milk has become foamy and your yeast activated, which should take around ten minutes.
  2. Using the bowl of a standing mixer with a whisk attachment (you could also use a hand mixer with a larger separate bowl), whisk your egg until it’s fluffy and light, which should take around one minute. Stir the yeast mixture in and a ¼ cup of Manuka honey until it’s incorporated fully.
  3. If you’re using a standing mixer, you should switch over to a paddle attachment. While the mixer is running, add in the butter until incorporated, going a tablespoon at a time.
  4. Using a medium-sized bowl, whisk the salt and flours together. While the mixer is running on low, add your flour mixture until incorporated fully, using individual spoonfuls.
  5. Remove your dough onto a slightly floured surface, kneading it until elastic and soft, which should take between five and seven minutes. Place your dough into a large, lightly oiled bowl before lightly covering the bowl in plastic wrap. Place the dough to the side into a warm spot until it’s doubled in size, which should take between 60-90 minutes. (You could also refrigerate your dough overnight before taking it out the day after and waiting for it to warm to room temperature).
  6. In the meantime, create a wash—whisk the rest of your Manuka honey together with two tablespoons of milk.
  7. Heat up your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit before lining parchment paper on a baking sheet and greasing the parchment lightly.
  8. When your dough has doubled, you can punch it down, dividing up six pieces, forming balls out of each one, and pinching together the seams at each one’s base. Flatten each ball so they’re about an inch thick before placing them evenly separated on the baking sheet.
  9. Brush the six rounds lightly with your prepared wash (to produce a deeper color, brush each round again after your first layer has dried), topping them with seeds, oats, or similar garnishes. Set to the side until each round has puffed and has nearly doubled in size, which should take around 15 minutes.
  10. Now, bake your rounds for around 20 minutes or until they’ve puffed and developed a golden color, rotating halfway to produce an even color. Allow the rounds to completely cool on a wire rack before you start serving.
