Integrating Manuka Honey into a Wellness Routine

November 08, 2018

Health

In its raw form, honey was said to have been used throughout history for various wellness and therapeutic uses dating all the way back to the world’s earliest of civilizations. What these early peoples prized honey for is the same as people today—the sweet syrup’s alleged antimicrobial properties, which is said to be even stronger in its New Zealand counterpart, Manuka honey. This honey supposedly features greater amounts of active antimicrobial compounds called methylglyoxal, which protect against bacteria while boosting cell production for tissue repair after infection.

While it varies by individual case on whether they use it in junction with other medical treatments or not, people have used Manuka honey as a balm for treating cuts, wounds, bed sores, and even acute burns. This honey can be an effective addition to any wellness routine, so if you’re interested, here are several methods for integrating Manuka honey into everyday life!

Washing Your Face

In order to use Manuka honey for skincare, you just need to go about washing your face as you would while using a normal face cleanser. Simply get your face wet, smear on a layer of Manuka honey, massage it gently into your skin, and then rinse it off thoroughly using lukewarm water, as this temperature will better open up your pores. This method is also ideal for anyone with sensitive skin.

Soothing a Cough

With winter not too far away, you should probably know a few tricks for soothing any coughing fits you may have. Swallow several spoonfuls of Manuka honey mixed together with warm milk, and this should properly soothe a sore throat or a cough. Beyond the fact this drink should remove some of the bad bacteria in your system, you’ll also be getting healthier faster while enjoying a sweet, delicious treat in the meantime.

Making Face Masks

To make a simple face mask, mix together some cinnamon and lemon juice with one tablespoon of Manuka honey. This mixture supposedly helps in clearing the pores while making the skin glow brighter.

Reducing Dandruff

There was a study recently that suggested applying Manuka honey onto your scalp for several hours every two days for one month helped participants improve itching and scaling from dandruff.

Healing Skin Lesions

Skin lesions aren’t something to leave to chance, so following traditional medical treatment would be wise, but if you have slight rashes, cuts, boils, or burns, Manuka honey can’t hurt either. Apply the honey twice per day as you would with antibiotic ointment, and you should see results sooner rather than later.
