We often here about all of the additional health benefits of honey, but what about all of the practical uses of honey that can save you money? If you are one of those people that save honey for their tea when sick, know that there are plenty of other things you can do with honey well before its expiration date. Best of all, using honey for these applications is far less expensive than actually buying the “normal” products made specifically for these uses.
Honey for Bathing
You did not read that wrong…honey is great to use in your bath or wash water to soothe and rejuvenate your skin. We have discussed this issue in past blogs how milk and honey baths were common in ancient times amongst society’s elite. Today, honey is much more affordable, so everyone can enjoy its bath/skin benefits.
For the bath, add about two cups of honey to your warm water and then take a 15-minute soak. You can do the same thing for your evening face wash by dropping a couple of tablespoons of honey into your sink water before washing your face.
Manuka Honey Lip Balm
While you can buy honey lip balm, if you already have some Manuka honey in your pantry, why not make it yourself? Honey’s natural properties will help soothe and heal your chapped, peeling lips from nature’s elements.
To make your own lip balm, combine three parts almond oil with one part melted beeswax. Mix the ingredients until well combined, then add one tablespoon of honey. Mix to combine again and then allow mixture to set.
Treating Small Cuts
Small cuts are commonplace in any home, especially where there are children. Honey has a naturally high pH as well as having natural antibacterial properties. In laymen’s terms, honey is a natural killer of bacteria.
To treat a small wound, simply apply some raw Manuka honey to the affected area. You can dress the wound area to prevent the honey from running to other parts of the skin. Please remember, you must use raw Manuka honey for this to be most effective. Processed honeys have been diluted of the natural ingredients in honey that will help naturally heal the wound.
Manuka Honey Shampoo
Honey is rich in minerals and vitamins that are very beneficial in hair care. These vitamins and minerals nourish both the scalp and follicles of the hair. In addition, honey naturally retains moisture to keep your hair healthy and alive.
To use honey as a shampoo, you will need to dilute it so its viscosity is not too thick to apply to your hair. You can mix one part honey to eight parts warm water. Wash your hair as you would normally and allow your homemade honey shampoo to sit in your hair for 15-30 minutes so it can saturate your hair and scalp. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
