Raw Honey Better for Homemade Dog Treats

May 14, 2018

Raw Honey

For all you raw honey lovers out there, you may be wondering if it is safe for your dogs to eat the honey as well, especially if you’re interested in baking homemade dog treats. To answer your question, Manuka honey should not hurt your dog, but, given that dogs are carnivores, you will want to keep the honey—and sweet things in general—to a minimum. A small quantity of honey, however, especially in baked homemade treats, is fine, just avoid the temptation to feed the dog too many of them because he will be begging for more!

Fortunately for dogs, honey-based dog treats aren’t at the level of ice cream cones, largely because raw honey is the more natural choice over sugar, as it is not processed. If you wish to use honey as a sugar substitute in some dog treats, you can try using a one-to-one ratio—just make sure the honey treats are used in moderation, so save training rewards for regular dog treats and save these for a "special treat." one calorie a piece.

Raw Honey Oat Dog Treats

Ingredients for Honey Oat Dog Treats
  • 1 cup of flour, whole wheat
  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup of raw honey
  • 1/4 cup of milk

Note: If you wish to use less sugar overall, then you can try using a non-dairy milk, such as almond milk or coconut milk.

Directions for Honey Oat Dog Treats
  1. To begin, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit on the Bake setting before lining parchment paper on a baking sheet. You can also use a baking mat made of silicone if you wish.
  2. Using a large mixing bowl, mix in all your ingredients, and knead the mixture well after you add each ingredient.
  3. Now, roll the dough into balls that are about half an inch in diameter, and then place the dough balls on your lined baking sheet, spacing them about one inch apart.
  4. Flatten the dough balls with the bottom of a glass or the back of spoon (dust either with flour to prevent the dough from sticking).
  5. Once the oven has reached its set temperature, bake the dough for about 10 minutes or until they have browned to a level you prefer.
  6. Allow the dog treats enough time to cool before refrigerating them. Make sure to keep them sealed well to make them last longer.
