Tips for Freeing Your Skin of Acne

April 09, 2018

Health

When you’re trying to deal with your acne, but nothing’s working, and it seems to only be getting worse, it’s easy to imagine how much this can stress you out. And, of course, to add insult to injury, breakouts seem to happen only at the most inconvenient of times—the morning before that big job interview, a first date, school portrait day, etc.

Despite what you might think, fighting acne isn’t the lost cause you think it is—there are methods available for fighting back and ridding your skin of acne. While it helps to find the right product that produces the results you desire, it’s also about your lifestyle choices. If you’re curious to know more, check out these easy tips for achieving clear skin, according to a renown New York dermatologist.

Avoid Touching Your Face

Per Dr. Debra Jaliman, who is a board-certified dermatologist, an assistant dermatology professor with Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine, and the author of Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist, constantly touching your face is one of the big things you should avoid doing. Jaliman stated, “Keep hands off your face, as there are bacteria on the fingers that get into your skin and cause breakouts.”

Seek Makeup with Certain Ingredients

Individuals who wear makeup on their acne are asking for trouble, as it often results in more breakouts than they would ever want to deal with. With this in mind, Dr. Jaliman suggests non-comedogenic makeup, which is made with salicylic acid specifically for those who are prone to developing blemishes.

Don’t Pop, Squeeze, or Pick — Ever!

While this is usually a go-to response for a lot of people, popping, squeezing, or picking pimples can cause serious issues with your complexion and even, per Jaliman, cause scarring. Rather than basically attacking your skin and any pimples you have, try using topical acne treatments or a deep-cleaning face mask.

Avoid Constantly Touching Your Phone

Something else to remain wary about would be cell phones. According to Jaliman, “Use earbuds for talking on the phone because [your cell phone is] full of bacteria.”

Try All-Natural Treatments

According to Jaliman, individuals can try using “a topical Manuka honey mask,” as it allegedly “gets rid of all the bacteria and inflammation.” For those interested in using Manuka honey face masks, apply the honey to your face as you might with other masks, leaving it there for about 15 minutes. Once your time is up, take a warm dishtowel or washcloth and remove the mask, following up with toner as well as an acne-combating moisturizer.

Take it Easy on Highly Processed Foods, Sugar, and Dairy

Regarding skincare, what you put in your body matters, especially your diet. Per Jaliman, “It’s important to eat right.” Regardless of whether you’re prone to breaking out, Jaliman advocates avoiding highly processed foods, dairy, and sugar in order to develop clearer skin.
