Dogs Love These Frozen Manuka Honey Treats

Manuka Honey

With this summer’s temperatures hitting unfortunate new highs, your dogs may be hoping for other treats besides what they get regularly. That’s right—I’m talking about frozen Manuka honey dog treats to help your dog cool down from the rampant summer heat. Luckily, for those of us who are no Martha Stewart, this particular recipe is very easy to get a handle on.

While you should make sure you avoid certain things when making homemade dog treats, such as dairy products, toxic fruits and nuts, too much salt, artificial sweeteners, and added sugar, you just need to find the right recipe that’s already taken precautions for you. On that note, let’s get started on those frozen Manuka honey dog treats!

Ingredients and Supplies for Frozen Manuka Honey Treats

  • 32 ounces of fat-free or low-fat plain yogurt
  • ½ cup of creamy, unsalted peanut butter
  • 3 tablespoons of raw Manuka honey
  • 2 ripened bananas
  • Ice cube trays or small, freezer-safe plastic containers
  • Mixing bowl and mixer

Directions for Frozen Manuka Honey Treats

  1. Whether you prefer an electronic mixer, a handheld mixer, or a potato masher, begin mixing the bananas and yogurt together in a medium-sized mixing bowl until you produce an even consistency.
  2. Once the bananas and yogurt are well-blended, add in the Manuka honey and peanut butter, mixing until the ingredients have blended well.
  3. Note: Depending on the size and type of storage containers or trays you use, this recipe makes a fairly sizeable portion, so if your dogs are on the smaller side, you might consider cutting the ingredients down by half.
  4. Once you’ve blended the batter, you can begin freezing it into the individual treats. Depending on how big your dogs are, pour your batter into freezer trays specifically made for dog treats (cheap ones can be found online if your local pet store doesn’t have any) or ice cube trays. Note: One-cup sized freezer containers may be used as well.
  5. Pour in the batter just beneath the top of the tray or container you choose to use. Put them in your freezer onto an even shelf to keep the batter from spilling out. You should wait roughly three hours or more before you serve.
  6. Single servings are recommended for canines of all shapes and sizes, but remember to serve sparingly, as these treats aren’t recommended for replacing regular meals.
  7. Note: If you used dog freezer trays or ice cube trays, remove the frozen treats and store them in freezer-safe storage bags or containers to prevent freezer burns or exposure to or contact with other items or scents in your freezer. Also, don’t serve dogs the treats while they’re still in the storage containers.
