Winnie Harlow is arguably one of the most polarizing figures in fashion today. Born Chantelle Whitney Brown-Young, she was diagnosed with a skin condition called “vitiligo” at the age of four. This skin condition causes depigmentation of the skin over various parts of the body. As a child, she was often ridiculed for the condition, being called names like “cow” and “zebra” growing up. Somehow, she managed to overcome all this bullying to come out much stronger and now she is one of the most popular models in the world.
Due to her skin condition, Harlow has a very specific routine she goes through to prevent her skin from getting irritated and reddened. As part of Fashion Week in 2019, she filmed her makeup routine to give everyone an inside look at how she prepares for a shoot as well as how she avoids irritating the sensitive parts of her skin.
Harlow stated that she typically does not wear any makeup on the white parts of her skin, however, she does treat the areas with a homemade mask. Two secret ingredients she uses to help fight redness on her skin are Visine and Manuka honey. To keep the redness at bay, Harlow says that she will rub Visine on the white patches of skin. She stated, “They make your eyes really white but they don’t burn like a lot of eyedrops tend to do. Sometimes too what I like to do is use Visine eye drops on the white parts of my skin to take the redness out. I have really bad allergies so I always have Visine on me anyway. I thought if it whitens my eyes, wouldn’t it whiten my skin? And I tried it and it does.”
Before Harlow puts the Visine on her skin, however, she does have a routine to prep her skin. Harlow cleanses her skin with a homemade mask made with apple cider vinegar, Aztec Secret Healing Indian Clay, and Manuka honey. She stated that she typically uses this mask twice a month. She stated she should probably do it more, but she is just “lazy.” After cleaning her skin, she applies the face mask, stating that the mask is her way of “preparing her skin for war.” She lets the mask sit on her face for about 20 minutes, then removes it before applying her makeup.
