Pohutukawa Honey-Glazed Bacon Dog Treats
June 14, 2019
Dogs love bacon just as much as their masters, so it is no surprise this is a very popular homemade dog treat when they find this in the hand of their owners. This is a fairly simple recipe to make, although it will take some prep time on your part. First, you will need to make the honey glazed bacon, then you can move forward with making the homemade dog treats.
To make the bacon, you will need to warm up some raw honey to drizzle over the bacon strips. We would recommend making a few extra strips, as you are going to be tempted to have a few pieces of this yourself. To thin out the honey, as raw honey is very thick, you can add some hot water to warm it up and thin it out. We are going to use Pohutukawa honey for this recipe because of the slightly salty flavor, which will complement the bacon as well as make the treat even more delicious for your pup.
Bacon Ingredients:
- 6 slices of bacon
- 1T raw (thinned as described above)
To Make:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- Line baking sheet with foil, then place bacon on sheet
- Drizzle honey over top of bacon
- Place baking sheet on middle rack of oven for 12-15 minutes (you are going to want to start to check on the bacon after about 10 minutes to ensure you do not burn it)
- Remove from oven and dice for next step of recipe
- Put bacon grease to the side for later use
Dog Treat Ingredients:
- 2 slices of Pohutukawa honey-glazed bacon, diced (the other four in the recipe above are for you!)
- 1c pumpkin puree
- 2 eggs
- 1c old fashioned oats
- 3c whole wheat flour
To Make:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Line baking sheet with parchment paper
- In an electric mixing bowl, add puree, eggs, and bacon fat (may have to warm this up if it has solidified) – beat on medium-high setting until all ingredients are combined
- Fold in oats and 2.5c of the flour at low speed until incorporated
- Add flour in ¼c increments until the dough loses its stickiness
- Add bacon and continue to beat until all ingredients are incorporated into the dough
- On a floured surface, knead the dough four times, then roll it out with rolling pin until it is about ¼” thick
- Use a cookie cutter to make the desired shape of the treats
- Place cutouts on baking sheet and place in oven for 20-25 minutes (until the edges of the treats are browned
- Remove from oven and allow to cool before feeding them to Fido
