Check Out These ‘Health Foods’ for Your Kitchen Needs

April 04, 2018

Health

For those who find themselves in a Whole Foods at least several times in a typical month, you’ve likely noticed the Bragg brand on the shelves with their distinctive yellow labels. While the branding itself leaves a little to be desired, Bragg’s nutritional yeast, apple cider vinegar, and liquid aminos are several “health” products you’ll definitely want to try out, especially if you’re looking for ways to use your stash of Manuka honey.

These products allow you to add interesting flavors without excluding anyone from a dish, whether you’re feeding gluten-free diets or vegans. If you’re interested in trying something new, let’s see how you can use these three products for your next meal.

Liquid Aminos

To describe liquid aminos, it is an all-purpose, soy-sauce-like seasoning that contains a lot of umami as well as a slightly sweet, rich flavor. It’s great in stews, soups, dips, and stir-fries, and you can use it like you would soy sauce, adding it to dishes that need hints of balanced, meaty richness.

Nutritional Yeast

This may sound like a strange choice for those who’ve never tried it, but hear me out. Whether you start out slow with a sprinkle here or there on a salad or dive right in by mixing it in with your popcorn during a movie, these cheese but-not-really-cheese flakes offer a change of pace for those looking to cut down on dairy in their diet. Once you’ve tried that, try stirring the nutritional yeast into scrambled eggs or using it for a vegetable broth.

Apple Cider Vinegar

If you’re looking, you’ll find a lot of different kinds of apple cider vinegar to choose from, but this particular unfiltered brand has a round sweetness to it that softens its acidic touch. You can use it for breaking down collagen in a chicken stock, mix it in with cocktails, or use it for marinades and salad dressings. You might avoid holding out for any miraculous health benefits from this vinegar, however, as there are other more reliable methods for this.

If you try out these different products and find that you like them, you can try combining them to make some seriously delicious vinaigrette. To do this, combine two teaspoons of liquid aminos, one tablespoon of nutritional yeast, and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a mason jar, adding two tablespoons of olive oil, one minced clove of garlic, and one big scoop of Manuka honey.

Shake up the mixture, so it can emulsify, before pouring it over your salad. Admittedly, it’s hard to say whether adding these products will improve your health as much as some say, but something that encourages you to eat a large pile of green vegetables can certainly set you on the right path.
