For those who want to eat healthier but are struggling to wrap their minds around it, there are a couple of changes you can make to your kitchen and your habits that just might help you trick your brain into making healthy eating happen. With the help of a few nutritionists and dietitians, here are some simple ways to arrange the fridge, store snacks, and prepare food that promote healthier living.

Move Healthy Items Front and Center

Keeping healthy snacks, such as fruits, vegetables, and grains, within reach and visible can potentially alter your snacking routines. According to Katie Serbinski, a registered dietitian with Mom-to-Mom Nutrition, ″Put healthy food where you can see it [in the fridge], and keep foods you want to cut back on in the fridge drawers.”

Google does something similar to encourage its employees to engage in healthier eating. According to Scott Giambastiani, Google’s global food program operations manager, “Water is the first thing you see in our refrigerators. Seasonal fruits are placed in bowls on open counters while packaged snacks and sweets are relegated to drawers or opaque jars.” Utilizing this tip means you’ll be more liable to choose healthy food for munching on or adding to a dish you’re cooking already. Lee stated, “Have different sections for different categories of food. It prevents cross contamination, but it also is organized so you can make a well-balanced meal.” Additionally, always remember to clean these different sections of your fridge, since, per Andrea Moss, who founded Moss Wellness, “A tidy fridge is an inviting fridge.”

Don’t Beat Yourself Up Over Indulgences

Whether it’s a craving for something salty or sweet, trying to rid yourself of every single indulgence isn’t going to work all the time. To find a more sensible balance, Moore recommends having just “one indulgent thing” inside your home at any given time while leaving everything else in the store. With this approach, that midnight craving will be much easier to overcome. For Lee, she suggests eating “the highest quality of your favorite dessert,” such as raw Manuka honey or organic brands of dark chocolate, possibly combined with other healthy snacks.
