A local chef is using all-natural ingredients to make her body and those of her clients “naturally heal.” Chef Deborah Frankel became a “natural” chef about 30 years ago and has come up with some pretty creative concoctions she says can fight off the flu and help prevent other illnesses as well.

Chef Frankel gets it all started in the morning, by having fresh lemon juice with a touch of celtic salt or raw honey in the morning. Rather than add more acid by having coffee, she says this alternative will add alkaline to the stomach as well as giving you a nice shot of Vitamin C to start your day.

Frankel also has some great advice when you feel a cold coming on… garlic. “The way to take medicinal garlic, you cut it up into really little pieces, you smack it to get its juices going, you let it sit for five to 10 minutes.” Then, you just pop it in your mouth and chase it down with some water. Chef says be careful not to chew it though, or you will be in for a rude awakening!

Another food item she recommends for doing battle with the flu is miso soup with some veggies, like beet greens, spinach, and/or kale. The Chef warns, though, not to boil the soup or you will boil away all those important nutrients.

After seeing her early morning concoction, we went on the prowl for additional ideas to start the day for those of you that don’t want to pucker up, so to speak, by drinking a healthy dose of lemon juice in the morning. This apple cider is a bit milder in taste and should go down much easier.

The ‘Raw’ Apple

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey

To make:

  1. In a small pot, warm one cup of water over medium heat
  2. When water is warmed, but not boiling, slowly stir in raw honey and continue to stir until it is completely dissolved in water
  3. Add apple cider vinegar
  4. Stir and serve

In addition to a morning drink, we have seen similar recipes to use this drink as a natural cleanse.
