How Men Should Take Care of Their Skin This Winter

November 16, 2018

Manuka Honey Products For Skin Care

As anyone with skin can attest to, winter is a mean season for skincare, with colder weather, sharper winds, and a lot more heat indoors doing a number on one’s skin, leaving it feeling rough, dry, and even peeling. For men, skincare in the winter involves much more than just stealing a pinch of your girlfriend’s lotion—not only because she may not appreciate the theft, but also because it’s likely not meeting your skin’s needs.

Skincare for men doesn’t just differ from women by a lotion’s packaging—there are subtle differences between male skin and female skin. For instance, male skin is 25 percent thicker due to testosterone, and men produce more skin oils compared to women, making them more susceptible to spots and oily skin. The most obvious difference, however, is treating skin on your face after shaving, with those hair follicles in particular needing attention. Marketing strategies aside, men have different skincare needs than women and should meet them accordingly, especially in winter. If you’re in need of skincare tips for winter, then check out some of our suggestions below:

Sunscreen All Year

Even during fall and winter, everyone, men and women alike, need proper sun protection, given we’re all subject to UV rays throughout the year. “It always comes down to sun protection,” says Dr. Jared Jagdeo, a dermatologist. “The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use on a day-to-day basis. I always say apply sunscreen three times a day: 15 minutes before you leave the house in the morning, 15 minutes before you go out for lunch, and 15 minutes before you leave for the day.”

Investing in Moisture

With humidity as low as it is in winter, people often see the moisture in their skin decrease tremendously. To fix this, you need a good moisturizer, with Jagdeo adding, “I tell my patients, as soon as they get out of the shower, pat your face dry, and while it’s still a little damp, pat [the moisturizer] on, and it will lock in moisture.”

Remember Handwashing

Even when they’re thorough about washing their face, one thing plenty of guys forget to take care of is washing their hands. “The hands really give away who we are as people and as men. Hands tell our story,” says Jagdeo. “They tell how much we really care about who we are and not just about the parts of our bodies we think people are looking at.”

Raw Manuka Honey Mask

While most men tend to avoid these, face masks shouldn’t be counted out for male skincare. This homemade face mask in particular nourishes and hydrates the skin while locking in the moisture. You just need a teaspoon of coconut oil, a ½ cup of grounded coffee beans, egg whites from one egg, a tablespoon of raw Manuka honey, and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Once all the ingredients are mixed together, apply the mask onto your face, leaving it there for about 15 minutes. With time up, rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.
