The Best At-Home Hair Masks
March 22, 2019
Sometimes, hair needs more than just what normal conditioning can offer. In fact, sometimes what your hair really needs is tender loving care, and hair masks are the answer for that. Fortunately, for you, this doesn’t mean you need to head out to the store and buy a mask off the shelf. Most likely, all the ingredients you need are all around your house to make an effective, homemade hair mask. If you’re willing to dedicate one night per week to self-care, the following hair mask recipes are the best way to get started.
Manuka Honey
DIY hair mask recipes are the most successful when they’re simple and easy-to-make, with this Manuka honey mask being the prime example for helping to treat both your scalp and hair. Besides being hydrating, Manuka honey supposedly has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antimicrobial properties your hair could benefit from. Also, honey, in general, is occlusive and can therefore trap moisture, and it’s capable of doing the same with your hair, preventing flakiness and dryness, which is especially helpful during the colder winter seasons.
Coconut Milk
As a trending topic right now, coconut milk has gotten considerable attention for its capabilities for restoring damaged hair. For this particular coconut milk hair mask, you just need a simple mix of (obviously) coconut milk, olive oil, Manuka honey, and Greek yogurt—all of which are said to help hair growth while also restoring your hair’s shine and vitality.
Avocado
According to Andrew Fitzsimons, a renowned hair stylist among celebrities, this avocado mask is the way to go. “Just mix 1 1/2 avocados with 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons of Manuka honey, and the juice of 1/2 a lemon. Blend until smooth [for] about 30 seconds. Finally, comb the mixture through your hair and let it sit for 45 minutes covered."
Avocado Cocoa
Back in the day, the internet was abuzz with how adding avocado into a chocolate mousse made it incredibly rich (and apparently better for your health) while also being dairy-free. Take this knowledge, and then use it for your haircare with this hair mask, which incorporates olive oil, avocado, and cocoa to add shine, volume, and moisture to your hair.
Aloe Vera
Some might say that the best DIY hair masks out there are as good for eating as they are for hair care, especially if every ingredient can go into a blender and come out together as breakfast. And, if this weren’t for your hair, this mask would be plenty scrumptious. For your hair, just slice open the aloe vera, scoop out the goop, blend it all up with some sugarless Greek yogurt and Manuka honey, and then spread it through your hair evenly.
Brown Sugar and Banana
While it might sound more like a dessert, brown sugar actually helps clear clogged impurities as well as boosting blood circulation toward hair follicles. Bananas are also said to improve shine and manageability, control and prevent dandruff, and moisturize your scalp. Put together, brown sugar and banana are rich in vitamins, potassium, and natural oils, and they should spread through your hair with ease.
