Dieticians Now Recommending Manuka Honey in Diet Plans
May 20, 2019
We have long touted Manuka honey for its rich, unique flavor, but the rest of the world is finally catching on. Registered dieticians are jumping on the bandwagon using Manuka honey in place of regular honey and other sweeteners in their meal plans.
Make Sure Your Manuka Honey is Real
In a recent article for MBG, dietician Maggie Michalczyk not only offered up some delicious recipes but also a great piece of advice. Before buying any Manuka honey, make sure you read the label to ensure you are getting what you pay for.
Manuka honey is well known for its antioxidant properties and enzymes, something the fraudulent brands of Manuka honey lack. The key to this is checking the UMF rating of the honey, or the Unique Manuka Factor. Other “types” of Manuka honey post different ratings to deceive the consumer, such as KFactor and MGO factor.
The big warning sign for honey in that category is generally the price. UMF Manuka honey is not cheap, often costing more than $70 for a pint. Regular Manuka honey that is not UMF rated will generally run between $40 and $50, depending on the brand. The counterfeit honeys are usually far less for both.
As part of a health regimen, most people buy the UMF honey but for cooking, regular Manuka honey or other honey from this region is our recommendation, such as Blue Borage or Pohutukawa honey, which will cost about half as much as even the regular Manuka honey.
In her article, Michalczyk, however, uses UMF honey in all her recipes to incorporate the benefits of this rich and tasty honey, so we are not going to argue with her! Here are just a few of her ideas:
Honey Yogurt Glaze for Salmon – this is just a basic glaze made with Manuka honey and Greek yogurt. She claims it gives your gut the probiotics it needs to promote healthy digestion.
Honey Mustard Dressing or Dipping Sauce – because many of the honey mustard dressings on store shelves are packed with oils and preservative, she recommends making your own dressing with Manuka honey and other whole food ingredients.
Right Out of the Jar – this is my personal favorite. Consuming a spoon of the rich honey every day has been reported to have a variety of positive effects on people. For me personally, I have used it to alleviate persistent heartburn. It is also quite useful to use when suffering from a sore throat or a persistent cough. By no means is it meant to replace professional medical treatment, but it might be worth a try if these problems are regular occurrences for you and are more of an annoyance than a medical issue.
